Aftershock Finishes 6th At Caraway

“YOU WERE THE SHOW”
Quoted modified competitor
Mike Norman, driver of the 12 car. Mike was unable to start the event due to
mechanical failure in practice but he wasn’t far from the action. Before Joe had
his helmet off Mike had his head in the window with hand shakes and congrats on
the impressive run bringing Joe and the 37 car to its 6th place finish.

Joe qualified deep in the field and went a lap down in the caution free
first segment of 75 laps. Joe was behind John Smiths 25 car at the break and did
not receive the lucky dog  returning him to the lead lap. At the
half way break Crew Chief McMullen pulled off a single man pitstop, swapping 2
tires, adjusting stagger while Scarbrough could be seen cleaning his own
windshield from inside the car!

When the race resumed Scarbrough was on a mission. It was obviously “GO
TIME” as Joe began to move forward in the pack, the lead pack! Joe was running
in a pack of cars that were battling for 4th thru 8th and he was going
forward in spectacular fashion. Joe didn’t seem to be able to pass on the low
side, he would drive under cars in the turns only to be over powered down the
straights…until he went to the high side and that was a show! Joe running
5th in line when he finally got the break he needed, a caution with 15 laps to go that would put him
back on the lead lap.  A 15 lap charge it was! Dead last on the grid, past the lapped traffic and digging thru
the leaders. Joe managed to pick off Thomas Stinsons  7 car with one lap to go and was rapidly gaining on the 02 of Tim Brown
when laps ran out.

From the back to the front twice and battling Frank Flemmings 40 most of the night to be the
lucky dog car, there wasn’t a dull moment.

Joes post race comments:

We had a really good run tonight. Mac learned a
lot at Thompson last race and it showed here. We felt the car was one of the
best handling cars on the race track at Thompson but we were horribly
underpowered. Here at Caraway our qualifying time is evidence of that as well.
It also makes it very difficult to work traffic. All of my passing must be done
in the corner and not only that, but the pass must be so dominant in a short
section of race track that I can take the groove away from the other car to keep
it from motoring by. Im really proud of my guys, we were joking about being the
3 musketeers,  Andy Bogg my spotter and Johnathan McMullen my crew chief.

They are great guys and great friends, I felt bad for Mac when I rolled down pit road at the
½ break and he was all by him self! He did a great job and gave me a great car. I know he has less to work
with now than ever before but hes really digging deep.

August 4th 2012
WINSTON SALEM NC

Survival was the name of the game at the infamous Mad house as the Strutmasters 199 set anew all time high for cautions, 2 of which Joe was involved in single car incidents. The night began with the team running 22ndfastest in practice. Joe had been complaining to Crew Chief Jonathan McMullen of a vibration in the left front right that made the car difficult to drive. Mac made several changes to the left front, seemingly solving the problem for qualifying. Joe qualified 21st In the 25 car field.

Once the green dropped the carnage began. Coming from his 21ststarting spot Joe made some spectacular moves ducking and dodging his way up to 13th when contact sent his 37 spinning in the first turn. Joe spun the car to the infield and pulled right back out before the leaders could come by, maintaining his place on the lead lap, but once again to the back of the pack. A long green session and heavy traffic allowed the leaders to catch and overtake Joe putting him a lap down.

Later in the event Joe was working his way around the non existent oustside groove in an attempt to get his lap back. Joe had worked his way around 3rd place car Andy Seuss and was moving to the outside of Tim Brown when he got into oil entering turn 3 and spun into the turn 3 wall, causing him to lose a second lap with 19 to go. After a quick pit Scarbrough returned to the melee and managed to get one of his 2 laps back as he continued to wrestle the 37 thru the pack of lead lap cars eventually finishing 12th.In a post race interview with Crew Chief Jonathan McMullen, “Mac”said “Joe did one hell of a job dodging the carnage tonight. Until this race he had never seen this place. He had a plan to stay out of trouble for the first 150 laps and then go like hell. It’s a shame things went the way they did, he was flying on the outside and wound up in the fence because of oil on the race track. After that contact with the fence he came in and the front end was all bent up, I told him to just go back out and be careful…dammed if he didn’t go out and start passing cars again!

We spoke to Joe after the race as well:

Madhouse…now I get it!! From lap one on I was watching guys slam and bang, there were a few cars that you just couldn’t get near. I could see that they were bound a determined to be a caution a few laps before it would happen, one would push, the other would shove, and the intensity would increase until carnage resulted. Im really proud of the team, we should have had another top ten finish here. The track crew did a great job of cleaning all the wrecks up for the most part but when they cleaned up the oil trail with 20 something to go they put a huge focus into cleaning  turn 1 and 2 and not really into 3 and 4. On the restart I took a shot on the outside and all the leaders dropped to the low groove, I found bite and drove from all the way up along side the 2nd place car from tenth! It was nuts!! I passed 6 or 7 cars in one turn and still had a run down the back straight but when I got to turn 3 the car instantly swapped ends, there was no saving it and the process of getting off the wall sealed our fate, putting us another lap down with too little time to get a second lap back. We got one of them! All said and done we had a decent night, we came from the back twice and for the most part the car is unscathed. We bent a tie rod and a wheel. Some nights you have to judge yourself by your performance and not by your finish. This performance was a personal victory.

Aftershock Motorsports General Manager was also Joes spotter for the evening, Darren Mix said "I dont know how he missed the wrecks he did tonight! At one point I watched him dive into the infield under one spinning car, turn the car almost dead right in the grass, shoot back up onto the race track, drop a gear, miss several spining cars and gain 4 positions without a scratch! As a spotter I was speechlees, and he did things like that all night! The only thing that really got him was the contact in turn one, the car on the outside came down and ran him over the burm, and the oil in three. Nobody knew it was there. The track crew spent close to 15 mins cleaning 1 and 2 but when Joe went sailing into 3 on the outside that car was backwards in what seemed like 3 car lengths. He did a great job, Im proud to have him as our driver. Easy on equipment and very strategic. We dont have the raw speed to just go out and dominate like we have in other divisions so Joes skill is what keeps this team in the hunt! Really, look at the car, 199 laps at Bowan and the only thing bent is a tie rod and thanks to him thats all thats bent! When I saw him go around on the outside in 3 I figured it was all over. Any body else would have wasted that car but he backed it up and kept going thru the field with inches of toe in!

Gremlins Follow The #37 Team To South Boston
Written by Administrator

Scarbrough and the Aftershock Motorsports team took to the high banks at South Boston Va this weekend. The team made several changes during the 2 practice sessions and qualified the car 21st in the 27 car field. Joe quickly moved up to 16th and settled in to ride. During an early caution, the 37 car strangely struck the inside retaining wall. The team lead by Crew Chief Johnathan (Mac) McMullen repaired the crash damage and the 37 returned to the race.

In those closing laps the reason Joe lost control became evident. A post race interview with McMullen stated "It looks like the pressure line on the rack came apart. The fitting on the pressure side pulled the threads out of the housing, its unbelievable that $1.00 part just cost us a race!" Joe stated "we really had a good car tonight. I was just settled in and letting the race come to me. I was scuffing tires during that caution period when the car just locked left! I had no idea what happened, I thought maybe one of my gloves got hooked or something but when we went back out after the repairs, the power steering was out and I knew that didn't happen when I hit the wall. Once again I felt we were well on our way to a top ten finish. I have confidence in this team, they prepare a very good car. See you at Caraway next week."

March 31st proved to be a tough night for Joe and the Aftershock motorsports team. Joe piloted the Hyperion Stud #37 to a 22nd starting position. Joe spent most of the race trailing the field but managed to stay on the lead lap in the 18th position at the 75 lap mark when the 1/2 mandatory break happened. When the race returned to green Joe began to work his way up to 13th. On lap 88 a spinning car rolled up the race track and clipped the left front tire breaking the steering rack and forcing Joe behind the wall. The team worked feverishly to replace the damaged parts in attempt to return to the event. The team was unsuccessful in its efforts to get back out on the track. In a post race interview Joe stated "Im very proud of the team, especially the crew chief Johnathan McMullen. The crew did a great job, especially when you consider this is the first time this team has competed at this level of competition. We were what appeared to be well on our way to a top ten before the lightning struck. Hopefully we will get it all back together and make it out for the next event." Joe is scheduled to compete at Caraway this coming weekend April 7th once again.
